Job Description
Members of the multifamily underwriting team provide support and analysis to relationship managers and department initiatives across the firm. Supports the credit team in completing the due diligence process used in making a prudent decision on whether or not to proceed with such items as extension of credit to a borrower and the submission of an application for mortgage insurance or loan applications to the internal credit approval process. The ultimate objective of the group is to contribute to the process of making a recommendation to the Underwriting Manager (Deputy Chief Underwriter (DCU) or Chief Underwriter (CU)) regarding underwriting approval.
  • Review financial statements analytics and cash flow models prepared by other underwriters 
  • Prepare more complex cash flow and/or construction disbursement models
  • Review and analyze more complex legal contracts such as applications, commitments and loan documents
  • Review and finalize drafts of narrative descriptions of transactions prepared for internal loan review by management  and request for approval
  • Provide understanding of the physical characteristics of properties and the related competitive advantages and disadvantages 
  • Investigate, analyze and communicate micro and macro-level location attributes of projects in consideration
  • Interface with clients to appropriately manage the underwriting process and provide feedback and support
  • Interface with agency staff to provide feedback and support of the Agency’s review and approval process
  • Review third party reports from vendors such as appraisers, surveyors, and engineers and ensure compliance with all prescribed requirements
  • May travel to perform property inspections  

Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting and at least five years of real estate experience
  • A minimum of 5 years multifamily underwriting and experience with Agency Underwriting (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and cash flow modeling skills
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, organization, planning, prioritization and detail orientation skills
  • Demonstrate ability to work well under pressure and within tight time constraints
  • Eligible to manage or perform loan origination or servicing functions under Mortgage Investor or government agency guideline requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct agency or with multifamily underwriting experience.
  • An understanding of real estate valuation techniques 
  • Possesses advanced level of expertise in Microsoft suite of products
  • Additional experience and knowledgeable with specialty products (e.g. seniors. Affordable, Manufactured Housing) standards
  • Experience with Agency Underwriting standards (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac)
